I started keeping budgies with a small oapaline skyblue hen that my dads freind gave me to keep in the house.A year or so later my dads freind brought me 4 pairs of budgies from Ireland. That got me interested in breeding them. After a while i started to look at budgies on the internet. The show birds realy looked good so i decided i would like to breed the birds with a veiw to show them. My dad gave me a 30ft x 6ft birdroom that he had built for his racing pigeons but never used. it had 26 2ftx2ft nest boxes in it .We added punchbar fronts and i had a ready made birdroom. I have had another 20ft added since then and another 26 2ft cages.
I like to give my birds plenty of room so i have four flights ranging from 12x6 to 6x6. This stops a bit of fighting and seems to get the birds into breeding condition a lot better. Plenty of noise but a lot of space and fresh air.
I keep my cocks and hens seperate but they are able to see each other in opposite flights. This helps when i put the birds together as they have not bonded with other birds in the flight and dont spend there first week or so calling to there chosen mate who may still be in the flight. My dad always keeps his canaries and pigeons sperated when the birds are not breeding so the birds dont have mates you dont know about when you pair. I know that most breeders keep there birds mixed in flights but i have had better results since keeping them seperated.
My birds are fed on bucktons 50,50 and plain canary seed at different mixes at different times. I put carrs adherb on there seed at all times and this keeps the birds very healthy
and in good condition. When breeding i give 80% plain canary and soacked groats which are covered in a pigeon product called gemthepax 57% PROTIEN AND A PROBIOTIC AND ALL THE NUTRIENTS BIRDS NEED. The probiotic is encapsulated so it can be given in the feed or water with any medication ie antibiotics etc if needed. I am not really giving soft food now as the groats soaked in gemthepax seem to do a better job and there is no waste, a lot of the budgies do not eat the soft food but throw it all over the cage floor. When the yong birds are weaned and breaking into the moult i put vydex feather sure into the water every other day.
I pair my birds in september and the first young birds usually have old rings on. Buy the time the new rings arrive the breeding is well on the way and most of the birds are well settled down.I never let my pairs rear more than 4 youngbirds. keeping them at 4 seems to keep the breeders in beter condition and it does not take to much out of them. I use oyster shell grit and all my dads pigeon minerals black pink and 5 in one which has a clay mix in it and the birds go mad for it. The 5 in 1 makes there droppings very tight and solid.. I like to look at all the budgie mags and the good web sites on the internet. One of the best sites must be Brian Sweetings with so much imformation on it. Another good site is budgies galore with some really good articles in it.
